Itinerary

Day 1 – Adelaide

Your Ghan journey begins in Adelaide as you board the train and settle into life on the rails. Travel north to Long Plains, then head into the picturesque Clare Valley, where a special dinner awaits at Penobscot Farm. Enjoy a farm-to-table feast featuring local produce and Clare Valley wines as the sun sets over the vineyards. After dinner, return to The Ghan and relax overnight as your journey continues north. (D)

Day 2 – Port Augusta & Flinders Ranges

Wake to the spectacular outback as The Ghan arrives in Port Augusta, the gateway to South Australia’s Flinders Ranges. After breakfast, embark on an Off Train Experience through one of the world’s oldest mountain ranges, taking in dramatic gorges, ancient rock formations and striking red landscapes.

Continue to the historic town of Quorn, where you’ll enjoy lunch paired with locally distilled Flinders Gin. Discover the ruins of Kanyaka Station and hear fascinating stories of early settlers and life in this rugged region. Return to The Ghan in the evening and relax as your outback adventure continues. (B, L, D)

Day 3 – Marla & Alice Springs

Wake to a spectacular sunrise in Marla, a remote outback outpost near the Northern Territory border. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings before returning to The Ghan for brunch as the desert landscape unfolds on the journey to Alice Springs.

In Alice Springs, choose from a range of Off Train Experiences, from exploring the town and surrounding landmarks to discovering Standley Chasm, Simpsons Gap or Alice Springs Desert Park. For something more adventurous, enjoy an off-road bike experience or upgrade to a scenic helicopter flight for breathtaking views over the outback. Return to The Ghan in the afternoon to relax and enjoy another evening of fine dining aboard the train. (B, L, D)

Day 4 – Katherine & Darwin

Your final day takes you into the tropical Top End, where you’ll explore the spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge. Cruise through its dramatic rocky cliffs while learning about the area’s deep cultural significance to the Jawoyn people.

Alternatively, discover outback life at the Katherine Outback Experience, explore the fascinating Cutta Cutta Caves or take a scenic helicopter flight over Nitmiluk.
